Stanley R. Welty Jr. was born in Warren, Ohio. After graduating from Wooster High School, his pursuit of education and academic excellence took him to Tusculum College in Greenville, Tennesse where he served as President of College Dormitory, Senior Class President and Business Manager of the yearbook. He received his B.S. Degree in Business Administration from that institution in 1951. Further academic accomplishments include additional graduate studies at Ohio State University and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters received from Tusculum College, in 2005.
Stanley served his country for four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Regarding his vocation, Stanley secured employment with the Armstrong Cork Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Kerr Glass eventually purchased his division and Stanley held various production planning and manufacturing positions in both Pennsylvania and Indiana over nearly three decades. In 1982, he joined The Wooster Brush Company (having served on the company’s Board of Directors since 1978) and became the company’s President on June 1, 1985. Stanley maintained associations with the American Production and Inventory Control Society, the Society of Plastic Engineers and the American Brush Manufacturers Association.
Stanley’s appreciation for education, his business acumen and his philanthropic and civic sense of responsibility informed his life’s stewardship. He occupied a position on the Board of Trustees of Tusculum College from 1988 until his death, chairing its Board from 1995 until 2002. For 12 years, he was an active member of the Board of Trustees of the College of Wooster (Wooster, Ohio), after which he was designated Emeritus Trustee. He held positions on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association (Wayne County Chapter), and The Salvation Army (Wooster Corps.). Stanley served as President of Rockland Housing Corporation, Director and designated Emeritus Trustee of Junior Achievement (Wayne County, Ohio), Director of the Cancer Society of Wayne County, Chairman of Goodwill Industries of Wayne County and Honorary Chair of the United Way of Holmes County Fund Drive. Moreover, he chaired initiatives and successful fund-raising campaigns for the Wayne County Historical Society, The Salvation Army (Wooster Corps.) and Goodwill Industries of Wayne County.
Stanley R. Welty invested his time, his skill and his heart as a Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Wooster, ARK Lodge #33 F. & A. A.M., Wilbur Welty Post #147 American Legion, The National Right to Work Committee, The Business-Industry Political Action Committee, the Western Reserve Society Sons of the American Revolution and The United Methodist Church of Wooster.
Stanley was active in the ad hoc committee that resulted in the Wooster Streetscape project. He also participated in the committee to pass a levy to provide a new library for Wayne County.
For his unflagging commitment and tireless dedication, Stanley was honored with awards such as The Salvation Army Others Award (1991), the Tusculum College Pioneer Award (1992), Goodwill Industries Lifetime Achievement Award (1994), the Wayne County Historical Society Distinguished Service Award (1994), the Tusculum College Distinguished Alumni Award (1997) and the Wooster Chamber of Commerece “Wall of Fame” Award (1997).
Stanley R. Welty leaves an illustrious legacy of lasting impact and achievements as an accomplished, invested citizen, and a committed family man.
